Mr. Dowson is an Environmental Affairs Manager at a medium sized engineering company in the North West of England. He got his company certified to ISO 14001 in early 1999 after about eighteen months developing and implementing the EMS. Along the way, he was able to identify areas of waste, and, as a bi-product of the EMS, his company enjoyed the benefits of considerable savings.

The system he developed is very direct, and goes straight into what he feels is most important: visible and tangible environmental improvements. This has been achieved through the identification of the significant environmental impacts and the introduction of control measures which either eliminate the impact or reduce its significance. The assessment body (BSI) remarked that parts of the system were models of best practice.
